Principal Cello
Martin completed a Bachelor of Music (cello performance) at Auckland University with Coral Bognuda, and then a Master of Music degree in with Diane Roscetti at the University of Maine, Orono. He performs with the Kowhai Baroque and Waikato Baroque and maintains a busy cello teaching schedule in Hamilton. From 2000 to 2005 Martin was conductor of the Waikato Schools’ Symphony Orchestra and from 2006 to 2008 he conducted the Waikato Youth Orchestra.
He is currently working on a PhD at the University of Waikato on New Zealand-born cellist and composer Arnold Trowell. In this capacity he has been a speaker and performer at conferences in Hamilton, Brisbane, Wellington and Christchurch. He has recently recorded a C.D. of Arnold Trowell’s music for cello and piano which will be released early in 2011. Martin is married to Rachael Griffiths-Hughes, with whom he has two daughters, Celia and Matilda. He is interested in antique books and plays soccer at the weekends when there are no concerts.
